At the beginning of every year we often think of ways to improve and refresh our lives. Personal goals such as spending more time with family or vowing to work out more are wonderful aspirations, but what about work ambitions? What can we do to refresh and start our jobs in the new year with fresh eyes?
In the spirit of continuous improvement, and inspired by the creation of the 8 Factors of Engagement model, I decided to reflect on the LeaderShip at the Helm and look for ways to make it easier to communicate, understand, and put into action. Here is what it looks like now:
Strategy acts as the true north for the model, and the People are the foundation. It is important that there is alignment between the two, in that every person must share the same mission, and understand how to collectively get there, in order for the organization to be most effective.
The right side of the Helm still speaks to how to maximize human potential; leadership takes the strategy that is given, and they become the ambassadors of the Culture of trust. This ensures that Teams and People are engaged and highly effective.
The left side of the Helm is all about performance and impact in the areas of Process, Customer, and Results.
This new version is straightforward, less overwhelming, and something people can quickly relate to. There is power in simplicity and this simple change of wording reflects how easy these concepts can be integrated into your organization.
Take a moment and ask yourself, what two areas of the Helm are your organization or team most effective at? What two areas are in need of some improvement? The Helm acts as a continuous guide to what needs to be worked on within an organization to make it most effective; just like steering a ship, it is in constant need of fine tune adjustments.
Simplifying the Helm came as result of reflection and embracing things from a different perspective. As we segue into the new year, how can we look at old projects and ideas and freshen them up? How can we change our mindset to stay innovative and creative? There is power in simplicity, power in reflection, and power in perspective.
I hope these ideas will help you accomplish great things in 2017, and remember to grab the Helm!
