Do you like to be put in a box? Nobody likes to be labeled. When taking a personality style evaluator like MBTI, DISC, or Insights Discovery, it is important to remember the unique you – you are the combination and blend of many different things. When speaking to motivation and engagement, we cannot rely on our personality style alone to understand what sparks our passion and actions. What motivates us is not always easily observed, so tools like the 12 Driving Forces help to take us out of the box.
Sometimes, others only see us through our leading color energy. They observe someone with an energetic personality and assume they must be Yellow, or they notice an individual’s attention to detail and label them as a “blue person” (unless your part of the Blue Man Group, or dressed as a Smurf, this is far from appropriate). We are the unique blend of all 4 Color Energies. Even if we have a pattern of color energies similar to others, what motivates and engages us can still be very different. The 12 Driving Forces gives us a clearer picture of the things that drive us, motivate us, and what creates our triggers for engagement.
For example, an associate of mine leads with green energy. It may be easy to think that assisting others is what drives her the most. But in fact, it is her thirst for knowledge and new ideas that keeps her motivated and ready to perform highly. You could stereotype someone with strong red energy and say that winning at all costs and quick decision making are their driving factors, but there are those who are actually motivated by collaborating with others and winning as a team. We all embrace our color energies in a different way – what are the forces that drive yours?
While there are times where a correlation does exist, your leading color energy does not necessarily become your driving force. The 4 Colors of Insights and the 12 Driving Forces are beneficial to each other because they are complementary, but they are two different models. The 12 Driving Forces helps to illuminate for us exactly how unique we are within our preferred color energies.
At Sicora, we use styles as a way to understand self and the behaviors we tend to demonstrate. Motivators help you understand yourself as well while also tying to your engagement. Whereas the 8 Factors of Engagement not only looks at the engagement of self, but that of team, organization, and those that we serve. The 12 Driving Forces allows us to look introspectively at engagement. It creates a different kind of awareness in yourself and others, and helps you to understand and utilize what drives you to perform.
Remember to be inclusive to all aspects of who you are. You may be bursting with blue energy but really get inspired working in a collaborative environment. Your perfect mix of yellow and green energy may be complemented by your desire for completing tasks. The 12 Driving Forces are the “why” behind what it is that you do. They can uncover and explain your passions while freeing you from seeing through just one color. What are the forces that are driving you today?
